SSL (Secure Socket Layer) ensures a secure connection between the user's computer and the server to which data is being sent. Such a secure connection is recognizable by the "https" in the address bar and the padlock next to the URL.
By using SSL, personal information such as passwords and payment details are encrypted. Hackers cannot intercept or manipulate this data.
